The Realities of RL21

A  THREAT TO SAFETY AND LIBERTY

South Dakota has become ground zero in the fight for two of our most fundamental rights: to control what happens to your property, and to have local governance.

Out-of-state corporate interests with deep pockets wrote SB 201 in the back hallways of the capitol in Pierre. Although they named it the “Landowner Bill of Rights” it’d be more accurate to call it the “Special Interests Bill of Goods.”

Referred Law 21 would take away the ability of local counties and municipalities to provide checks and balances and instead hand over all power to the three members of the Public Utilities Commission.

The language used in the law would force the PUC to approve every pipeline application it receives.

The law says that landowners “may” be compensated from the fees imposed.

RL21 does nothing to protect landowners and citizens from the inherent dangers of CO2 pipelines and the millions of dollars needed for local first responders to deal with a pipeline leak or explosion that could injure and kill thousands.

It’s a bad law that deserves to be defeated.
